Steamroller Tournament Report

So I went along to the Warmachine/HORDES Steamroller tournament in Gamers World on June 16th. The format was 35 points, second list optional. So I brought my Blindwater Congregation.

List One : The Blindwater Congregation (35 points)
Bloody Barnabas (6 WP)
Blackhide Wrastler (9)
Ironback Spitter (8)
Bull Snapper (3)
Wrong-Eye and Snapjaw (9)
Thrullg (3)
5 Gatorman Posse (9)

List Two : The Blindwater Congregation (34 points)
Maelok, the Dreadbound (6 WP)
Blackhide Wrastler (9)
Ironback Spitter (8)
Bull Snapper (3)
Bull Snapper (3)
Totem Hunter (3)
Thrullg (3)
Feralgeist (1)
5 Gatorman Posse (9)
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew (1)

I'd rather have had more options, but I wasn't prepared to field unpainted figures. I had intended to paint a Gatorman Witch Doctor and Rask, but when I opened my army case I had a lot of repair and touch up work to do so all I got to finish off was the Totem Hunter and Thrullg. That's the reason I had to leave the second list short one point as well, after I removed Wrong-Eye and Snapjaw (character models are restricted to one list only) I simply had no more figures done.

Turnout for the tournament was good as well, 18 players showed. The regular Steamroller events are becoming increasingly popular, which is nice to see.

Game 1 vs. Richie (Legion of Everblight) - Outflank Scenario

Richie's list - Thagrosh, Carnivean, Scythean, 5 Blighted Ogrun Warspears with Warspear Chieftain, 6 Blighted Nyss Legionnaires.

I picked Maelok for this game. Richie made a couple of mistakes in this game. Firstly, he deployed almost entirely on one flank (his right, my left) which left one of the zones open to me for most of the game, so I sent a single Bull Snapper to control the zone and start to accumulate Control Points. Richie played very cautiously and slowly advanced, allowing me into the second zone first. I camped in there and destroyed Richie's Legionnaires first after they charged my Blackhide Wrastler, then his Carnivean after it charged and failed to kill my Gatorman Posse (which, of course, Thagrosh brought straight back to life). The game devolved into a mass fight in the left zone, all the while I continued to accumulate Control Points in the right zone. In my final turn, knowing I would score the winning Control Point at the end of the game, I killed off the Warspears and Chieftain in order to accumulate further tiebreaker points.

Win, by scenario, 5-0. The end game position pictured below.

Game 2 vs. Anthony (Cryx) - Into The Breach Scenario

Anthony's list - eSkarre, Deathjack, Nightmare, General Gerlak Slaughterborn, Gorman di Wulfe, 2 Pistol Wraiths, 10 Satyxis Raiders.

I chose to field the Maelok list again. Cryx are one of those factions with a lot of special rules, which I don't really know very well, so I find them difficult to face. Anthony used his Satyxis' speed and mini feat to get them into my face quickly and make it difficult for me to contest the zone. The rest of his force moved up as well. I advanced into position also and made several attempts to contest the zone to deny Anthony points. He shot both the Thrullg and Totem Hunter with his Pistol Wraiths, didn't kill either but managed to Death Chill the Thrullg (but not the Totem Hunter), which allowed me to kill off the Pistol Wraiths in my turn, but not before Gorman hit my Wrastler and Spitter with a Blind Bomb. This cost me the Wrastler and nearly the Spitter when Anthony charged Deathjack in. The Satyxis and Slaughterborn struggled with the Gatorman Posse (ARM 20 in melee with Death Pact and 8 damage is hard to crack), which allowed the Gators to kill most of the Satyxis in return. Anthony had used eSkarre's feat to prevent me attacking her, Deathjack, Nightmare, Gorman and Slaughterborn for one turn, and in turn Deathjack killed the Ironback Spitter and a Gatorman. Anthony was smart enough to back eSkarre out of the zone this turn, if he had stayed put I would have had an assassination on if I revived both dead Gatormen, feated for incorporeal and charged. So I went for Deathjack instead and made a mess of it. At this stage Anthony cleared the zone, moved eSkarre back in to dominate and score the winning Control Points.

Loss, by scenario, 0-5. Again, final position below.

Game 3 vs. Lorcan (Circle Orboros) - Close Quarters Scenario

Lorcan's list - eBaldur, Megalith, Wold Guardian, Wold Watcher, Celestial Fulcrum, Gallows Grove, 3 Shifting Stones with Stone Keeper, 3 Shifting Stones.

I was hoping Lorcan would pick his other list, not enough living models in here for my Gators' liking. I used my Bloody Barnabas list this time. Lorcan had a lot of rock-hard (pun intended) wolds, and the Shifting Stones to teleport them around. I put up Barnabas' Warpath spell early, and it proved to be the difference maker. As Lorcan and I moved forward, I used a Gatorman to destroy a Shifting Stone, allowing my Blackhide Wrastler to push forward and charge the Celestial Fulcrum, he needed to use his full Fury allowance to barely destroy it. Wrong-Eye then hit Megalith with his Voodoo Doll spell, denying it the Spirit aspect so it couldn't be forced. Lorcan then committed eBaldur to combat, but rolled shockingly bad. At this point, I took a risk. Both Snapjaw and the Ironback Spitter forced themselves to the limit to destroy Megalith, which triggered Warpath, moving the Blackhide Wrastler into position to charge eBaldur and eat him.

Win, by assassination, 0-0 Control Points. Final position below.

Game 4 vs. Gavin (Khador) - Process of Elimination Scenario

Gavin's list - Strakhov, Beast-09, War Dog, Gun Carraige, 6 Doom Reavers with Greylord Escort, Kayazy Eliminators, Winter Guard Mortar, Gorman di Wulfe, Widowmaker Marksman, Kovnik Josef Grigorovitch.

Back to Maelok for this game. Gavin pushed forward with his Doom Reavers and Kayazy Eliminators to put pressure on the Gators, and used Beast-09 to destroy the right objective early. The Gators responded by killing the Eliminators and most of the Doom Reavers and got into the right side zone to stop Gavin winning on scenario, he had already accumulated 3 control points. On the left, the Totem Hunter leaped into melee with both Gorman and the Widowmaker Marksman, slaying both (thanks to Prey), then next turn jumped to the back of the board to kill Kovnik Joe and the Mortar in the turn after. Beast-09 killed the Blackhide Wrastler but was then slain along with the remaining Doom Reavers and the Greylord Escort. This left Strakhov, his Wardog and the Gun Carraige alive on the Khador side. The Carraige charged across to attack the remaining Gators, killing a Bull Snapper, but due to the high ARM of the Gatorman Posse in melee was next to be destroyed after the remaining Gatormen and the Ironback Spitter ganged up on it, then the Totem Hunter killed the Wardog. With just Strakhov left alive, I could have finished him but decided to win on scenario instead for the tiebreaker points (I didn't worry about assassination, as I could keep Maelok loaded with Fury for transfers), I began my last turn 4-3 up on Control Points. With Maelok dominating the right zone, I sent the Ironback Spitter to destroy the other objective and control the left zone also, but it turns out I was wasting my time as the Control Points tiebreaker is capped at 5 anyway.

Win, by scenario, 5-3. Final position below.

Some conclusions
  • No idea why I was so reluctant to play Warmachine/HORDES tournaments, they're a lot of fun and everyone I've ever met at them are really friendly and all games are played in the correct spirit. No idea about other places, but we seem to have a great community here.
  • I really need to have another read of my own rules. There are plenty of things I can do with my own models that never even crossed my mind.
  • I really should play more games with my Gators.
  • Need to paint up more models, it would be nice to have more choice and the next Steamroller is 50pts and I don't have enough for even one list at that points value.
And finally, some more photos from the event
